G4 90 Rebuild

Hi all im new here, been a member of LR4x4 for years but as ive brought a G4 LE id thought i would join up & show you my new project

I own a Land Rover Approved Bodyshop & Restoration Centre here in Surrey & thought instead of repairing everyone elses cars I would do one for myself.

If people are intrested I will keep you posted with the Rebuild

hi a recent trip to buildwas with Alan and Brendan although great fun thanks to them (still dont believe brendan went up that huge hill in reverse lol did you ever get photos) as mine ended up being towed back to camp with broken rear diff hence this post does anyone know where i can get a 4 pin 12 spline rear diff land rover part TBB 000270 or an exchange unit which could be LRO 06047 any advice or help would be great thanks

Hi All,

As you know from recent posts I'm searching for a G4 defender.

I've come across a 90 on auto trader but its in black and called a G4 "Edition" I always thought that G4's only came in orange, a member on the LRO forum believes a number were made in black but not for the competition.

Can anyone confirm the differnce for me between the orange and black G4's

Hi All,

Just quick hello, Ian here, new member on the forum, also fairly new to the G4 world, some general land rover experience but never been able to afford a decent one in the past. (and don't really have the mechanical know how for an older one)

So thought I'd join the forum and not only listen to what you have to say but may be able to contribute, As soon as I can lay my hands on a G4 I'll also join the club, missed one by a day last week - gutted.

Still I'm sure there'll be other.

Hello,
I am not a G4 owner but I do have a G4 generously on loan from Land Rover (although currently detained by customs officials in Santos Port, Brazil).
I thought you might be interested in the progress of our expedition. Our project Atlantic Rising won the 'Go Beyond' bursary from Land Rover last year. Our idea is to circumnavigate the Atlantic along the one metre contour line - this is predicted to be the new coastline of the ocean in 100 years if sea levels continue to rise.
We are creating a network between schools in low lying communities along the way and producing classroom resources based on places we visit. We are also exploring what could be lost if sea levels continue to rise and finding about some of the innovative ways that communities around the ocean are adapting to or mitigating the problems of climate change.
In September 2009 we left the UK and drove along the coast of Europe and West Africa. We then travelled with our car by container ship from Cote d'Ivoire to Brazil. Our plan is to drive up the east coast of the Americas all the way to Canada.
We have been stuck in the mud in Mauritania, picked up hitch hiking rebels in Cote d'Ivoire and camped everywhere from beaches in Western Sahara to alleyways in Dakar.
Any advice for taking a car along the Amazon or shipping between Columbia and Panama would be welcomed.

Our budget has been thrown out by the month's delay in Brazil but we are still keen on finding a way to continue out ambitious plans for the next six months.

Winch Security

Dear Colleagues,

Last night someone tried to steal my winch; all they got was the hook off the wire rope ...

Following recent winch thefts where the winch is unbolted an then the wires are cut, I had 2 bolts spot welded from the winch to the winch bumper and then 2 further bolts from the bumper to the chassis spot welded.

Not sure what else I can do.....so be warned as this seems to be increasing....

Nas Spec Or U.k Spec Mantec Sump Guard

Hello All

I went to order my mantec sump guard from mantec for my 52 reg freelander auto and they say they have two in stock, a G4 NAS spec one or a G4 UK/Europe spec one, The NAS spec one has a section cut out as the Americans thought that a full sump guard may cause overheating !!!

Anyway my question is does anyone have any pictures of both the UK spec and NAS spec sump guard.

I know there was a G4 sump guard on ebay about a month back and I wonder if this was in fact a NAS spec one.

Oh and the NAS spec sump guard is cheaper than the UK one but I am just waiting for them to get back to me to give me the price for each of them.

battery advice

the alarm on my 2002 110 keeps going off i suspect due to the batteries ive tried to recondition them using a speacial charger on advice but dosnt seam to make a difference for long but then i dont drive it every day does anyone know the best place to get a well priced pair of batteries and whats a good make to go for i live in west mids so need somewhere localish thanks

Number plate mount

Whilst my car was in for repair today it was pointed out that one of the screw fittings that hold the number plate mounting to the winch cradle was broken. (I hope that makes sense to you)

Does anybody know if you can just buy the screws or whether a whole new number plate is required.

Either way anybody know where I can replacements from.

Went our for a little play and got a free ride home due to the front drive shaft letting go. At this rate I will get a complete new drive train by the end of the year :D

Was out running a Mountain Rescue fundraising event yesterday when the front passenger wheel bearing decided to let go.

Oh the joys of owning a LR.

On the plus side there was a lad there who father owns a G4 08 RR Vogue. Apparently he is not a forum member yet but his son was going to suggest he signs up.

Friends are looking at buying a D3, she's quite taken by the G4's. There's one for sale on the D3 forum and then this one's popped up. Anyone know it / used to own it ?

It's £3k more than the one on the D3 forum but seems to come with a bootful of gear (not £3k's worth though).

RRS Battery question

Does anyone know if the battery fitted to the RRS is an uprated one or is it the standard size fitted to all RRS models ?

Mine died at Chievely services yesterday, after I stood listening to the radio whilst scoffing a sandwich. Forgot that the blowers were going full tilt as well, so 15 minutes later I turned the key to start up and just got a *click* from the engine. Felt a right numpty I can tell you. Anyway, upshot of that was Mr AA telling me the battery was fubar anyway and looks to be the original, so as it's due a service anyway I'll get a new one fitted. Obviously if it's uprated I'll need to get one ordered in ready, rather than them fitting the standard one.

Hi,

Had a great time at Driffield, not such a good time on the way home, though. Overheated and broke down about 5miles from the show, had to get AA to tow caravan while we found a garage with a jet wash to blast the mud from the radiator. We were fine after that apart from the squealing wheels and broken parking brake, don't think we'll do the off road course next time :(

Bodywork Advice

I have a couple of bubbles in the paintwork low down and one of them has been knocked off to expose alluminium. What's the best thing to treat it with for now. I am looking to refresh the paintwork at some point but wondering what is the best advice to treat it now. Also some of the rivet heads have black marks streaming from them which polish off but come back and a couple have paint flaking off.

I have an orange touch up kit but don't know if this should be painted string on or should it be prepared with somthing.

Defender Soft/Rubber A-Bar & Winch Bumper query

Hoping someone can help.

I have a 57' plate defender 110 and brought the soft friendly A-bar from ebay, fitted it and it looks great with the spots, however, I have found out that Land Rover did versions for use with or without a winch bumper.

Does anyone know the exact differances between both versions of the soft A-Bar (LR005235 & LR5742) as both seem to have the same dimensions as per the Land Rovers Accessories website?

The one I have which I believe is LR005235 has 45 degree cut outs on the inside of the upright and looks like it was to fit a winch bumper but I dont know anyone with a defender standard winch bumper to try it on.
The fitting instructions for the non winch version even shows these cut outs.

As I am thinking about fitting a winch, this would cost enough money let alone trying to source a new winch freindly soft A-Bar.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a replacement battery for a 55 petrol FFRR, usual g4 lights winch etc at present it has the 900cca 110ah landrover battery but if you check replacements it only suggests a 720cca 80ah

Also is it worth adding a second whilst replacing

charity trip

Dear Colleagues

I have for some time wanted to do a trip in my G4 to aid those less fortunate than ourselves.

If anyone is interested in this I prepose a meeting on May 1st (evening) at the Heritage center at Gaydon - this will tie in nicely with Heritage show and AGM?

A general out line would be to agree a suitable project within the EU and something we could do in an extended weekend / week. Fund raise during the summer and go late in the year.

One idea might be to collect toys/clothes etc for an ophanage and deliver in time for an early christmas.

Please feel free to add suggestions or indeed, do you have something already in the pipeline?

How were the '03 G4 Freelander Warn roof lamps mounted and wired?

Hi,

I have an original G4 Freelander used in the 2003 race. It still has the original Safety Devices rack and I just acquired a set of four Warn SDB-160 lights that I'll be mounting to the rack.

Does anyone know the wiring from the lamps was run to the relay box in the engine compartment? I see that there is a small cutout in the base of the safety devices "rack bib" on the passenger side. I'm wondering if the wiring was run through that hole and down into the engine compartment along (or inside) the snorkel? It would appear that's the case in these photos:

Although it's strange as it appears the wire for the rear worklamp is attached to the outside of the snorkel?

If they ran the wiring through the snorkel does anyone know where they cut the exit hole in the snorkel, without defeating the whole purpose of the snorkel?

Also, the G4 Freelanders were lifted or fitted with any special coils, were they? Is there a good set of coils for the 2002 Freelander?

Spot light switch

I have just bought a Discovery 3 G4 and i love it, I found the disconnected cable for the four spot lamps located on the roof rack and reconnected it to the supply for the main beam (as i would like them to come on when i use the headlamp flasher) Is there a way of linking the cables on the spotlight switch so that every time the lights are switched off you dont have to reset the spotlight switch.... if you know what i mean!!!

Generator and trailer

I bought the attached some weeks ago, a 1.8ton trailer with a generator (puts out 35AMPS) and air blower (both hot and cold air), it does all work. It cost the US Army over $76,000 when new some years ago.............
