About the Vehicles : 2009 Challenge
For the third G4 Challenge which was going to take place in 2009, 95 vehicles were built. All painted in Tangiers Orange, except for 2 Discovery 3 ambulances, which were silver. Not all the vehicles were fully equipped with G4 kit. Due to the cancellation of the 2009 G4 Challenge, only 45 or so vehicles were used in anger. Ten went to Mongolia, where 8 scouted for suitable terrain and locations for the Challenge. These have subsequently become known as the "Recce vehicles". These were 4 x Defender 110’s, 2 x Freelander 2’s, 2 x Discovery 3’s. The remaining 2 vehicles being a Range Rover Sport and a Range Rover.
The other 35 plus vehicles that were used, took part in the UK and Irish Selections Event at Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire and the Belgium National Selections.
An unknown number of additional vehicles were also produced for National Selections in Austria, Australia, Canada, China, Brazil, Norway / Sweden, Russia and South Africa. The spec of most of these vehicles differed from the final event ones
Defender 110
Number Prepared: 6 - 5 now remaining. All vehicles fully equipped with G4 kit
Usage:: 4 used on event recce in Mongolia during 2008.
1 written off in crash - body shell and G4 kit now sold on.

Specification: XS Utility, TDCi. Full G4 kit – Roof rack, Hella Xenon roof lights, Mantec steering and tank guards, internal load guards, side bins and shelf, jackable sills, Goodyear MT/R tyres, Warn 9.5Ti Winch.
Where are they now: The 4 recce vehicles now in private ownership.
Defender 130
Number Prepared: 5
Usage: None
Specification: TDCi County Spec with Quadtec box body. No G4 equipment was originally fitted to these vehicles other than Tangiers Orange paintwork.
Where are they now: 3 vehicles now in private ownership. 2 still owned by Land Rover having being kitted for expedition work.
Discovery 3 (LR3)
Number Prepared: 68 including 2 Ambulances in silver.
Usage: 2 used on event recce in Mongolia during 2008 30 used in UK+Irish and Belgian selections.
Specification: HSE TDV6. Most though not all of these vehicles were fully fitted with G4 equipment:- Roofrack, Hella Xenon roof lights, Mantec steering and tank guards, internal load guards, Goodyear MT/R tyres, Warn 9000XP Winch.
Where are they now: Most of these vehicles are now in private ownership.
Freelander 2
Number Prepared: 7
Usage: 2 used on event recce in Mongolia during 2008.
Specification: HSE TD4. Only the 2 Mongolia recce vehicles were fully fitted with G4 equipment:- Roofrack, Hella Xenon roof lights (pair only), Mantec sump and tank guards, internal load guards, Goodyear MT/R tyres.
Where are they now: Most vehicles now in private ownership.
Range Rover
Number Prepared: 2 TDV8
Usage: 1 used as publicity vehicle during recce in Mongolia 2008 1 used on Belgium Selections 2008
Specification: HSE and Vogue. Both of these Ranger Rovers were fully fitted with G4 equipment:- Roofrack, Hella Xenon roof lights, Mantec steering and tank guards, internal load guards, Goodyear MT/R tyres, Warn 9000XP Winch..
Where are they now: Both vehicles now in private ownership.
Range Rover Sport
Number Prepared: (6 TDV8, 2 TDV6)
Usage: 1 used as publicity vehicle during recce in Mongolia 2008
1 used on Belgium Selections 2008
1 used on UK+Irish Selections 2008
